ABOUT

THE STUDIO

Field Notes Studio is a garden and landscape design practice, based in Cape Town.

The studio seeks to create distinct, liveable outdoor spaces that support and enhance the interactions between people and their environment. We believe that our gardens should serve as an extension of our natural environment, ushering biodiversity and seasonality in.

By observing and meticulously documenting the terrain and project site, we create designs that are responsive to the surrounding natural landscape. Our gardens are similarly designed to respect the ecosystem, microclimate and vegetation type of which they form a part.

We feel an obligation and responsibility – living in a country that contains three of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, one of the world’s six floral kingdoms and incredibly high plant endemism – to design outdoor spaces that protect our unique floral and faunal diversity.

We enjoy building personal, long-lasting relationships with clients, and work closely with contractors, nurseries and specialists to ensure that designs are delivered on time, to budget, and meet the expectations of clients.

The studio takes on projects of all sizes.

THE FOUNDER

Field Notes Studio was founded by Sarah Colenbrander.

Sarah’s education and work experience in the fields of conservation ecology, ecosystem science and landscape architecture have coalesced into the creation of a detail-oriented, personable and rigorous landscape design studio that focuses on the creation of indigenous and naturalistic gardens.
